The Franklin County Coroner's Office is responsible for conducting medicolegal death investigations. Currently there are eight full-time forensic technicians that work under the direction of the Chief Investigator.

Investigations at the Franklin County Coroner's office are standardized and follow the National Institute of Justice's recommended guidelines. Beyond the set guidelines for death investigation, each Forensic Technician is also strongly encouraged to become a registered death investigator through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI). ABMDI is accredited by the Forensic Science Accreditation Board and sets the standards for uniform investigations conducted by Coroner or ME systems through out the United States.

The investigator's primary duties include responding to the scenes and performing death investigations. That includes examination of the decedents, interviewing family members and witnesses, establishing legal next of kin, recovering personal property, confirming positive identification and writing reports.
